Are there new CPT codes for the recently authorized COVID-19 booster dose-specific vial from Moderna?
Yes. The AMA announced the creation of two new codes 91309 and 0094A that describe Moderna’s new 50 mcg/0.5 mL booster dose-specific COVID-19 vaccine vial. Code 91309 is the product code and 0094A is its associated administration code. These two codes are reported for the booster dose-specific vial which is packaged with a blue cap/purple border. CPT code 91309 should not be reported for booster doses pulled from the previously authorized primary dose vials, which are packaged at a concentration of 100 mcg/0.5mL and have a red cap/light blue border; these should continue to be reported with code 91301. CMS has confirmed on its COVID-19 Vaccines and Monoclonal antibodies homepage the effective date for the new codes will be March 29, 2022, the same day the FDA amended Moderna’s Emergency Use Authorization to include the new booster dose-specific product.
For your convenience, the long descriptors are listed below:
- 91309: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative free, 50 mcg/0.5 mL dosage, for intramuscular use
