Is there a new code for administration of the Pfizer vaccine booster dose?

Yes.  On September 15, 2021, in a Special Edition of the CPT Assistant (linked below), the AMA announced the addition of new codes related to COVID-19 vaccines and their related administration code(s).  Code 0004A was created to describe administration of a booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine product code 91300.

On September 28, 2021, CMS announced that the effective date for code 0004A will be retroactively set to September 22, 2021.  A link to that information is also provided.

The long descriptor for 0004A is:

  • 0004A:  Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNALNP, spike protein, preservative free, 30 mcg/0.3 mL dosage, diluent reconstituted; booster dose

We are also providing a link to the CDC guidance on who is eligible for a COVID -19 vaccine booster shot.
