Has the AMA announced a new CPT code for a possible 3rd dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine?
Yes. On July 30, 2021, the AMA announced the creation of new vaccine administration code, 0003A, in preparation for the possible approval of a 3rd “booster” dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. We have provided the long descriptor for the new CPT code below for your convenience.
- 0003A: Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative free, 30 mcg/0.3 mL dosage, diluent reconstituted; third dose
It is important to note this code is not yet active. The code will only become effective upon the FDA fully approving a 3rd dose, or amending its existing Emergency Use Authorization (EAU) for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
As of the publication date of this Q&A, the CDC and FDA are currently of the opinion that booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines are not needed at this time. However, as with all topics related to COVID, this is subject to change. We will provide any updates regarding approval of booster doses and code availability as they occur.
