Is there a new code for the administration of the Novavax COVID-19 booster dose?

Yes. The AMA announced the creation of a new CPT code to describe the administration of a booster dose for the Novavax vaccine. Its effective date is pending FDA approval. Its long descriptor is listed as:

  • 0044A -- Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, recombinant spike protein nanoparticle, saponin-based adjuvant, preservative free, 5 mcg/0.5 mL dosage; booster dose

The Novavax booster is for patients 18 years and older.

The Novavax vaccine product code (CPT 91304) remains unchanged, and the long descriptor is provided below for your convenience:

  • 91304 -- Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, recombinant spike protein nanoparticle, saponin-based adjuvant, preservative free, 5 mcg/0.5mL dosage, for intramuscular use
