Is the AMA consolidating CPT codes for COVID-19?

Yes. On August 14, 2023, the CPT Editorial Panel announced that they were restructuring CPT coding for COVID-19 vaccine products and administration codes. Six new CPT codes were created, that will have an effective date commiserate with the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization approval, which is yet to be determined. CPT codes 91318, 91319, 91320, 91321, 91322 describe COVID-19 vaccine products offered by Pfizer and Moderna. New CPT code 90480 describes an administration service. Previously existing CPT code 91304, for the Novavax product is being retained.

Effective November 1, 2023, all existing CPT codes that describe COVID-19 product codes and their associated administration codes that end in “A” (e.g., 0001A, 0002A, 0003A, etc.) will be recognized as a deleted code in the CPT code set. This will involve the deletion of 64 codes.

More information and a comprehensive list of all the affected codes, along with their code descriptors, are provided in the links below.
